Proud, free mounted warriors who banded together in Russia and Ukraine in the 16th century, the cossacks started out as "farmer regiments" who had to resist the attacks of the Crimean Tatars. In Turkic, "cossack" means free warrior or border guard. A number of cossack bands were integrated into the Red Army after the Russian Revolution, and their officers were issued a typical cossack sabre – the shashka.

Our cossack shashka sabre is a replica of this horseman's sabre with a forward drop that is designed to deliver effective cuts and swings from a horse's back. The slightly curved, single-edged blade has a wide, flat fuller that runs about 4/5 of its length. It has a short ricasso and a false edge at the point. The short grip made of red brown, decorated wood is framed in brass and surrounds the riveted full tang. The brass pommel has the typical shape of an eagle head. It has embossed decoration, including the Soviet hammer and sickle. The hole is for a wrist strap.

This cossack shashka sabre comes with a wooden scabbard covered in black leather with a throat and chape.
